10 Tips For Your First BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) Class

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) has grown immensely in popularity over the past few years, thanks to its effectiveness in real-life self-defense situations and its rise in mixed martial arts. If you're considering attending your first BJJ class, preparation can make the experience more enjoyable and fruitful. Here are ten tips to help you get started on the right foot.

1. Wear Appropriate Clothing

For your first class, it's advisable to wear a rash guard and grappling shorts but if that is too much commitment, at the very least wear a t-shirt and shorts without zippers. Once you decide to continue, invest in a quality BJJ GI.

2. Keep Your Nails Trimmed

Long nails can be a hazard in BJJ, leading to unintentional cuts or scratches. Ensure your fingernails and toenails are trimmed to avoid injuring yourself or your training partner.

3. Arrive Early

Showing up 15-20 minutes before class allows you to familiarize yourself with the facility, meet the instructor, and warm up properly.

4. Inform the Instructor About Injuries or Limitations

If you have any existing injuries or physical limitations, it's essential to let your instructor know. They can offer modifications or advice to ensure you train safely.

5. Keep an Open Mind
